The rise of smartphones with high-quality photography options has altered the photography landscape, at least in terms of volume. Current estimates place the number of photographs taken each year at around 1.72 trillion.
Of course, many of these are commonplace images like selfies, food, or family shots. Yet, many of the images are more specific or more carefully planned. For example, some people focus on desert photos.
What many new photographers don’t know is how best to edit their desert photography. If that sounds like your situation, keep reading. We’ll cover some photo editor tips that can help you make your desert photography ideas into stunning desert photo realities.
Editing Software
The first thing you need for editing your desert photography is a good editing program. For beginners, you may want something free. There are two reasons for this: cost and simplicity.
Most free editing software excludes the bells and whistles you see in pro-level photo editing software. Losing the bells and whistles typically simplifies the user interface, making it easier to learn and experiment.
If you want some of those more advanced features, you’ll need a paid option. Photoshop is the professional standard for photo editing, but its feature set is so in-depth that it’s often overpowered for new photographers.
Adobe Lightroom is a nice middle-ground for beginners who want more options than freeware but find Photoshop too much to handle.
Presets
Presets are a powerful option for photo editing. You can find them for many photo editing software packages. Just as importantly, you can find desert photo presets.
Wondering what a preset is? You can think of presets as filters designed around a specific type of photograph. These filters apply a range of specific settings to an image, such as:
- Hue
- Shadow
- Contrast
- Grain
- Color
These presets give your images a particular look and feel, as well as correcting for common problems with that type of photo.
Photo Editing Tips
Beyond applying presets, there are some other general photo editing tips to keep in mind. At the top is the rule of thirds.
In essence, the rule of thirds recommends keeping the main point of interest in the photo offset to one side or the other. Careful cropping can help you accomplish this.
Since desert images are often stark, look for ways you can heighten contrast in your images to boost the interest factor.
Don’t forget that there are other tools that help fix problems with your images, such as a background remover.
Editing Desert Photos
For anyone living in a desert area, desert photos may prove your only viable option for pursuing your photography hobby or career. Once you have those photos, though, you must edit them.
Take advantage of options like presets, if your editing software supports them. They can let you avoid a lot of manual adjustments.
Also, remember that things like background removers or even cropping can help fix problems in your image.
